Private Agricultural Secondary School

The ASAP (Association for Small African Projects) foundation has developed and executed many projects in the rural villages of Burkina Faso. One of our achievements are the 13 primary schools built in various villages over the past 13 years. The program of primary studies takes 6 years and today close to 2.600 children are attending. Children who are successful in finishing the primary school are sent to public secondary schools. Those secondary schools have very poor results (due to a lack of teachers, lack of motivation of the teachers and no follow-up of children). Moreover the studies are general not adapted to the environment. This makes it difficult for students to be motivated to study there or to be send there by their families since it will not be very helpful. The success rate for finishing the 4 years of secondary school is incredibly low (1% or 2% out of a 100 children).

Therefore change was necessary.

ASAP and the villagers created a plan for a Private Agricultural Secondary School (LAP – Lycée Agricole Privé). ASAP will manage the school with the aim of offering a possibility for a secondary education adapted to their own needs.

• Private: to be able to control the quality of the program and the teaching.
• Agricultural: close to 100% of the villagers are farmers. At the end of the 4 years studies, the children will be able or to continue further studies or to start to work on the fields of their family.

Children starting the school will be between 12 and 15 years old. The number of children per year will be limited to 70. Students from several villages will be able to attend the school.

The school will be built in the province of Houet, department of Léna given to ASAP by the villages of Oualana and Kofila.
