The Literacy program

doel1 doel2

What

Literacy education for adults in Burkina Faso.

Whom

Literacy education is given by local teachers who are trained by the Training Institute Sirayiri. Control takes place from this Institute and from the Ministry of education in Burkina Faso, which also is responsible for the exams that after 2 years of education can be written.

Where

Adult education takes place in rural areas in Burkina Faso, in literacy centers built by the ASAP foundation or in the evening hours in the classrooms of elementary schools.

Why

ASAP believes that knowledge is the key to development. In Burkina Faso is the percentage of the population that illiterate is alarmingly high: more than 75% is illiterate. With a view to the future offers ASAP both children and adults access to written knowledge.

How

For 2010, a reform of the training program and the establishment of a new lesson method has been planned. In cooperation with the Sirayiri Training Institute ( they have extensive experience with giving Literacy education), we will improve our teaching method. With the literacy program ASAP provides 50 course days in two years during the dry season. The participants pay school fees, which is a part of the salary of the schoolteacher and the learning resources.

Results

The reform of the program for 2010 is the result of disappointing results in the past. Only about 20% of the participants took the exam in the past. With the reform and cooperation with the training Institute Sirayiri we expect an improvement of the results.

The plan is to start with 30 new students in each of the 9 villages of whom at least the half are women.

Evaluation

The ASAP foundation will have a follow up of this project by having discussions with the participants and with the Sirayiri Training Institute. These conversations will reveal the extent to which the new method the trainers and participants like it. In addition, the success rate in two years an important indicator of the success of this project.
