What
The distribution of mosquito nets to women with children in Burkina Faso.
Whom
The local organization of the ASAP foundation buys and distributes mosquito nets in all ASAP villages. They register the payments of the women who participate in the mosquito net project.
Where
The countryside of Burkina Faso, in all ASAP villages.
Why
In Burkina Faso dies 1 of 5 the children before they become 5 years old. This situation is a result of a combination of factors:
- Lack of nutrition for children
- Diseases such as malaria, meningitis, diarrhea ...
- Limited access to medical facilities
- Lack of money to buy drugs
- Lack of knowledge regarding baby food and basic hygiene
ASAP shall contribute through different projects in the above causes of death. The mosquito net project is here a very important project. The use of mosquito nets can be simple and fast reduce the number of malaria infections and the number of young children that dies of malaria.
How
The mosquito nets are impregnated with DEET. They are bought by ASAP in Burkina Faso. The total costs of a mosquito net are € 6.50. Women pay € 1.50 per net themselves. The remaining € 5,-is, with the help of donations, paid by the ASAP foundation. In each village we explain how to use the mosquito-nets. The mosquito-nets can be washed 20 times before they have to be impregnated with DEET again.
Evaluation
The short term results are registered by the local organization of ASAP in Burkina Faso. They visit the villages; supervise the correct distribution, registration and payment of the mosquito nets. Further they register new requests. ASAP gets the medical results through local medical posts and hospitals.
