Hygiene program
What
The hygiene program is an initiative of the ASAP foundation. They like to introduce washing hands on nursery and primary schools. In 2010, this project started focussing more on building toilets.
Whom
Children learn at school that hand-washing is important to challenge diseases and infections. The children take the information along to home and confront their families with what they have learned at school.
Where
In rural Burkina Faso, in all villages where ASAP is active.
Why
Hand washing is a simple important remedy against diseases and infections. Especially children are very vulnerable to diarrhea, flu and other infectious diseases. Therefore, the children learn that it is very important to wash the hands with SOAP and water after a visit to the toilet and before they start cooking and eating.
There are currently not or hardly toilets in the villages. It is important for hygiene, but also for the privacy, especially girls – as soon as it is known that girls are indisposed, they are mature enough supposed to marry – that toilets are built.
How
In all primary schools and kindergartens that ASAP has built, simple water installations are placed where the children can wash their hands easily under a tap.
Evaluation
The school management is responsible for supervising compliance with the hygiene program. This is evaluated by the local organization of ASAP.
