Papaya project
What
To cultivate papaya trees. The mothers of school-age children have the supervision of these trees. Annually they donate 5 papaws (papayas) to the school lunch program and with the other revenue they may trade for their own consumption.
Whom
The ASAP foundation grows the papaya trees on up to the age of six months. After the 6 months the papaya trees are sold to the mothers at a small cost of € 0.15 per tree. The mothers are then responsible for the care of the papaya tree.
Where
The countryside of Burkina Faso, in all ASAP villages.
Why
In rural areas of Burkina Faso are meals mainly cereals: no vegetable or fruit. This one-sided diet is one of the initiators of malnutrition of school children, making them more susceptible to diseases and less able to perform at school. Good and varied nutrition is so important! For breaking the one-sided diet in rural Burkina Faso, the papaya tree is ideal. The papaya tree gives fruit after 9 months and produces after 4 years about 35 kilos of papayas. The mothers who buy a papaya tree can further enable the papayas for own consumption. But when they annually donate the 5 papaws (papayas) to the school lunch program of their children, the women get the following year a free new papaya tree of ASAP! By sufficient production the papayas can even be sold on the market.
How
At the beginning of 2009 the ASAP foundation has started the papaya project and 1000 trees are grown. The implementation costs amounted to € 250,-and these costs earn itself back through the own contribution of the mothers.
Results
The results of this project are unknown for the time being, since it is still in the early stages of this new project.
Evaluation
Benchmarking discussions with the mothers take place, to see how the trees are growing.
